چکیده

The 2008 banking crisis demonstrated that there is a lack of effective methods for modeling and analyzing “exceptional but plausible” risk scenarios in bank stress testing. Existing stress testing practices mainly focus on modeling probability-based risk factors and events in banking systems using historical data. Rare (low probability) risk events that can cause financial crises in banking systems, such as the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers, are largely ignored due to the lack of appropriate modeling and analysis methods. To address this problem, we propose an approach called Banking Event-driven Scenario-oriented Stress Testing (or simply, BESST) which has two main components: 1) an ontologybased event-driven scenario model (OESM), and 2) two analysis methods based on OESM for scenario recommendation and plausibility checking. The proposed BESST approach provides bank stress testing stakeholders an effective method for modeling and analyzing financial crisis scenarios that are rare but often have significant consequences. Stress testing of banks: an introduction

Stress testing involves putting a severe amount of pressure on an object or system, to test how resilient it is under extreme conditions. It is a tool used in a number of industries, from construction to cardiac health care. When applied to banks, stress testing involves analysing how these institutions would cope with hypothetical adverse scenarios, such as severe recessions or financial crise...

The Coordination Role of Stress Test Disclosure in Bank Risk Taking

We examine whether stress-test disclosures distort banks’risk-taking decisions. We study a model in which a regulator may choose to rescue banks in the event of concurrent bank failures. Our analysis reveals a novel coordination role of stress-test disclosures. By disclosing stress tests, a regulator informs all banks of the failure likelihood of other banks, which facilitates bank’s coordinati...

Stress Testing: A Review of key Concepts

The note is a review of the literature on the quantitative methods used to assess the vulnerabilities of financial systems to risks. In particular, the author focuses on the role of system-wide stress testing. He summarizes the recent developments in the literature, highlighting topics relevant for the Czech case. He presents the key concepts relating to systemwide stress tests, overviews the s...

Stress Tests and Bank Portfolio Choice∗

How informative should bank stress tests be? I use Bayesian persuasion to formalize stress tests and show that regulators can reduce the likelihood of a bank run by performing tests which are only partially informative. Optimal stress tests give just enough failing grades to keep passing grades credible enough to avoid runs. The worse the state of the banking system, the more stringent stress t...

Macro Stress Tests and History - Based Stressed PD : The Case of Hong Kong

This paper discusses the issues about the stress testing of banks’ credit portfolios. Currently there is no standard methodology to perform stress tests on banks’ credit portfolios and no standard to evaluate self-reported stress testing results from banks. Some banks and bank supervisors have attempted to build econometrics models for macro stress tests. These models may provide inconsistent c...
